I bought two of these. Both of them came with screws that were far too small to hold the pieces together so I had to go to my parts drawer and get some real screws (#6 1-1/4" worked fine). All the parts on both units fit together well (although one of the units definitely had better quality-control than the other) and it only took about 10 minutes to assemble each of them. I did use the glue generously on the wood pegs and at each end of the uprights. You need to use the glue if you don't want it to wiggle.
I read about the trouble people were having with the shelves falling down and I think it's because the sides can bow outward easily. I overcame that by installing a screw at the mid-point of each upright on the back side, and then tying the two screws together with a piece of picture hanging wire across the back of the unit. Now the sides can't bow out.
With the modifications, the shelf is very sturdy. I had all of the stuff lying around so it didn't add any cost, and it added an extra 10 minutes to the set-up time.

We bought one of these back in March, 2008 and I am getting ready to order another one. We need more dvd/cd storage. This unit is exactly what I expected for the price that I paid, and for the lightweight use for DVDs and CDs it works great! I wouldn't necessarily recommend using it for books or your priceless collection of Lladro figurines, but for DVDs and CDs it works great, and I've not had any problems with it coming apart or anything. I like that it matches the "entertainment center" that we bought for our LCD television. If you are looking for something to store your DVDs and CDS in, I would recommend this!

When I read some of the reviews I was a little afraid of purchasing this product, since the reviews were so mixed. I went ahead and ordered it though, since the price was good and it shipped free with prime. I got my order two days after I purchased it and it was in great condition. It was real easy to put together --) took me about 20 minutes. You'll need an electric strewdriver or drill to put it together. It's really sturdy though. One of the reviewers said they had to use wood glue; I didn't have that problem. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because it had a weird smell to it from the oils used to treat the wood, which upset my allergies. I wiped it down good though and that helped. The day after I ordered this I was shopping at Meijer and found a similar, but narrower unit for $20. I put it together and was going to refuse this item when it came. Unfortunately, it didn't work where I wanted it, so I kept this piece when it arrived. The quality of the $20 unit I bought was much better than this! The finish is nice on it, but that's about the only good thing I have to say. The shelves don't sit evenly- the unit side walls feel unstable- the directions are awful and it is awkward to assemble. I've put together a lot of this type of thing, the latest project being a captain's bed, so I am comfortable with assembling these types of items. Definitely not worth the price. We received one of these exact shelves as a gift, so when we needed more DVD space we went ahead and bought one ourselves. They look nice enough, BUT, the sides are not sturdy enough, or maybe the shelves are not long enough, the shelves will fall down and dump all the DVDS if you bump it. We are going to try to wood glue the sides to each of the shelves, because it seems the sides bow out a bit. We'll see if that works. But money was tight and it was the cheapest one I could find that held so much, so, overall if I was in a money crunch again I would buy it again. This dvd shelf is absolute garbage. I wouldn't even use it if someone gave it to me for free. The shelf is extremely flimsy and the little metal pegs are useless (agreed with another reviewer). My dvd's have all fallen off on more than 1 occasion. This is the worst dvd shelf I have ever used. Atlantic is a crappy brand anyways. You can find cheap, very sturdy multimedia shelves but you gotta know where to look. That's why reviewers like us are here to help. Avoid this shelf at all costs!
